Red Line/ Green Line
Red Line/ Green Line is a visual which helps your child see the progression of anger and helps them use the strategies taught at SRSP to get their anger under control, or "on the green line". The common language cue for this strategy is to ask the student, "Are you on the green line?", or "What strategy can you use to get back on the green line?"
As you can see from the visual to the left, the red and green lines are parallel to each other. the problem starts at the left hand side of the page. Once the problem starts, we want the students to learn to solve it by staying "on the green line", or "staying in control." If the first reaction of the student is to "go on the red line" by getting angry and being inappropriate, the visual shows them they have opportunities to get "back onto the green line." The closer to the beginning of the problem the student gets back onto the green line, the better. At SRSPwe teach that even though we feel anger, we need to stay on the green line by using a calm down strategy and then solve the problem that made us feel angry.
Your child should bring home a personalized visual on which they have chosen strategies that they feel work for them. If there are strategies that they use at home, eg- listen to my ipod, they can add them to the visual with you. It is also important to note that this visual shows your child that there are consequences for staying on the red line with their anger. This too can be individualized for home and for specific situations.
