The "Smartie" Program (Used in the Primary Program)
Each week a "Smartie" sheet is sent home with your child that helps communicate how your child is doing in the SRSP classroom. The social skill theme for the week is also written on the sheet. If there is a visual that matches the skill it will be attached to the sheet. Below is an explanation of how the students earn their smarties:
In SRSP smarties are 5 different coloured circles that the students earn throughout the day when they display the targeted appropriate behaviours. Each colour represents a different set of behaviours:
Purple- Empathy and Friendship skills
Yellow- Co-operation skills
Blue- F.E.V.E.R. (paying attention skills)
Green- “following staff instructions”
Red- weekly goal (their personal challenge)
The “smarties” are kept in yogurt containers at the front of the classroom. When the students are given one they are told why they are getting it; “Here is a blue smartie for showing good F.E.V.E.R. during check-in”
The students keep the smarties in their desks and at the end of the day they bring them to “check-out”, where they are tallied on their “check-out” sheet. If they reach their goal for the week they get a “free pass”, which entitles them to take free time during one academic period the following week.
What can you do with the "smartie" sheet when it arrives home?
-Read over the sheet with your child and give them positive feedback about the areas that they have earned "smarties"
-Talk about their goal with them an ask them what strategies they used to achieve their goal
-Ask your child what they think would be a good goal for next week
-Discuss the social skills focus and what social skill your child has learned this week
-Set a weekly goal for home and reinforce your child when they are working on the goal
