F.E.V.E.R.
In SRSP the acronym F.E.V.E.R. is used to teach the "social skill" of listening and responding. The common language cue that is used is " Are you giving me F.E.V.E.R.?" Your child is taught that listening is a skill that has several components. The acronym is taught and modeled, then good listening is cued by saying " Are you giving me F.E.V.E.R.?" or, "Can you show me F.E.V.E.R.?"
Each letter in the word F.E.V.E.R. stands for a component of listening:
F stands for "face the person" : to listen well it is important to have your body facing the person talking
E stands for "eye contact" : to listen well it is important to be looking at the person talking
V stands for "voice" (tone and volume): to listen well it is good to respond with a respectful tone and volume of voice
E stands for "expression" : to listen well it is important for you to have appropriate expressions on
your face, such as smiling when being told something nice
R stands for "relax" : to listen well it is important to keep your body relaxed, not anxious and tense
To reinforce this concept refer to the poster that is sent home after the lesson is taught, role model the strategy by pointing out to your child when you are using each step, and positively reinforce them when they are using F.E.V.E.R. by simply saying " I see you are using excellent F.E.V.E.R.!"
It is important to remember that listening is an important social skill. Not only do students need to listen well in order to learn at school, when a student builds this social skill they are building the foundation to other skills such as friendship and problem solving.
